Abortion Through The Centuries

To abort means to stop in between. Aborting hence means to stop forcefully the fetus from developing into a baby.

While many people may think that the controversy surrounding abortion has been only a recent moral issue, abortion has always been a hot topic among even ancient societies. Abortion can be traced to as far back as the ancient Romans and Greeks who were actually great proponents of it; some of the most famous philosophers of the day actually wrote about it positively. There are many texts that exist today that not only argue the benefits of abortion, but also offer recipes and herbs that can be taken to terminate pregnancy.

Massage abortions were practiced in Southeast Asia since at least 1150 AD; a carving was fond in Cambodia representing this practice. There are also records of abortion existing in 12th century Japan. Abortion has seen many phases throughout history, the first written records show ancient civilizations in support of it, but as the Middle Ages progressed many nobles and clergymen began to speak out against it. Pamphlets were written advertising that it was an abominable sin, and many spoke out in the hopes of making it against the law.

Because of this shift in society's perception of abortion, women resorted to very drastic and deadly measures in the hopes of terminating pregnancies. Many women used their girdle to place enormous pressure on their abdomens as a means of terminating pregnancy. The 19th century saw many bans placed upon the practice of abortion; around this time many medical and scientific developments were also taking place which allowed for a sort of back door clinic for women in need of help. Advertisements were placed in newspapers offering things such as herbal pills for a "lady's remedy".

Ann Lohman, or Madame Restell as she was known, was a popular women's activist in the Victorian era who aided women with abortions. During this time in history abortions were illegal, so her job was very dangerous and secretive. She had clinics in both Boston and Philadelphia and was under constant scrutiny from law enforcement agencies. She placed a number of ads offering pills to women who needed to "regulate their menstrual cycle". She also spoke to many women, even those that were married, about the risks of having children and whether or not it was worth the emotional and financial burden. In 1878 she was arrested, but the morning before she was due in court she committed suicide.

Abortion - Wrong?

The Christian Church from the 1st Century has condemned abortion. "You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish." (Paragraph 2271 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church quoting the early church writings.) Prior to the New Testament we have God's Word regarding creation of humans in Psalm 139:13-16. "For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother's womb. Again in Jeremiah 1:5 we read: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you."

Biologically, after only a few weeks, it is clear that the differentiation of the zygote (single cell fertilized egg) is a developing human being. The three tissue groups, the ectoderm (skin, nervous system, glands) the mesoderm ( muscles, bone) and the endoderm (gut, & internal organs) are well developed. A heart beat can be detected before the woman looks pregnant.

In spite of all this evidence some refuse to acknowledge that God has created a new human life in a mother's womb; because it is not yet born. Human experience also confirms life after conception. Human experience reinforces the fact that abortion is evil and usually has serious consequences. My experience in ministering to ladies for over 30 years in prayer ministry sessions is this: Abortion and incest sins rank highest in destructive consequences for the woman.

Incest is obvious and quickly recognized as wrong, however; abortion is unfortunately often more subtle in its destructive consequences. A woman can have an "unclean" feeling and is constantly washing her hands or doing some other act to assuage the haunting guilt that she experiences. People in abortion clinics (nurses, employees) statistically have much higher psychological problems such as guilt and stress. It is so disabling to some that they have to quit their jobs.

Mother Theresa of Calcutta was asked on a U.S. national interview. "What do you think is America's greatest problem?" With little hesitation she said one word "abortion". After the surprised response from the interviewer she went on to explain. If a country that condones killing unborn children and their mothers approve this, then the country is in serious trouble because of such a lack of respect for a new life.

This repudiation of God's miraculous gift of new life has its consequences. Incidentally someone once charted a graph showing a lock step correlation with the number of abortions and the economic decline that has occurred since the Roe vs. Wade ruling sanctioned increased abortions.

So serious in the eyes of the Church is abortion that excommunication is possibility. I quote the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Paragraph 2272: "Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of ex-communication "latae sentential" by the very commission of the offense and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as the parents and whole society."

It seems clear to the Catholic Church that abortion is murder of a helpless human life, in utero, for she says this in the Catechism in paragraph 2273: The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of civil society and its legislation: The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and the political authority. These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents: nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state: they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights one should mention in this regard every human being's right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception until death.

Paragraph 2274 makes it clear that from conception the person... the embryo and fetus, must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, just like any other human being.

Abortion - Is It Simply a Matter of 'For Abortion' Or 'Against Abortion'?

I came across a website the other day that deals with what it describes as 'religious tolerance' in the matter of abortion. One of the points it makes is that our fondness for dichotomy means that we simplify the issue of abortion into two camps, pro-abortion and pro-life and by so doing we misunderstand the complexities of the subject. Examples it uses are us vs them, religious versus secular worldviews, theists versus atheists etc. The reality, it goes on to say, is that there are at least four categories of views on abortion with a subsequent host of sub-categories. This got me thinking - is this true? Is it a matter of for or against or is it more complex? Is this sort of argument simply wishy-washy liberalism or does it have merit?

Well, let's look at it. For the purposes of this discussion we will confine ourselves to the four different viewpoints identified.

The pro-life movement - this view holds that human life is generated at the point of contraception. There are some conflicts in this group with regard to issues such as danger to the mother's life, rape, incest etc and there is no doubt that this gives rise to some disagreement within this group. We can note that most religious views can be found here.
The anti-abortion movement - these are people who hold pro-life views but who are prepared to adopt extreme tactics (violence, threats etc) to see their view imposed.
The pro-choice movement - this view teaches that the foetus becomes human at some point in its gestation. Usually this will be identified as the point where sentience is achieved.
The pro-abortion movement - the article identifies this view only to say that it does not exist. A strange 'fourth view', I have to say.

So what can we say about this analysis? Well, firstly, it is clear that the article itself admits that there are not four points, merely three. Therefore, let's discount point four altogether - it seems to have been created simply to add weight to the argument. Secondly, let's look at the difference between viewpoints numbers 2 and 3. On closer inspection it becomes clear that there is no difference in viewpoint simply in strategy, one option preferring to remain within the confines of the legal system, the other to do 'whatever it takes'. In terms of is 'is abortion right or wrong?' there is no difference.

So, in reality, there are, in fact, only two viewpoints that you can take on abortion. It is either right or it is wrong. This is fairly obvious when you think about it as, given that both viewpoints disallow murder, the fundamental difference between the respective viewpoints is disagreement as to the point at which we become human. Ironically, the only complex issues arise within the pro-life camp and concern the question of whether there are circumstances where we can be justified in taking a life. (eg victims of rape, danger to the mother etc). This is made so complex because, in the case of rape, for instance, the foetus itself can also be said to be a victim of rape - it is certainly totally innocent, and if you believe that you are human at conception then surely (if you are pro-life)then you are promoting institutionalised murder. Really, everything flows from this. My own feeling is that even this is not central to the issue and that if you believe the foetus is another human being, you can never allow abortion. Does that sound extreme? Possibly, but for me it is the only choice that makes sense.

Having struggled through this argument, I came to realise that the aim of the article is not to debate the merits or otherwise of abortion but to encourage consensus. Personally, I agree with tolerance but I do not agree with consensus for consensus sake - such an approach is the road to social and moral chaos. My final conclusions, therefore, are that the article in question is indeed more liberal wishy-washy than worthwhile contribution to the debate. It seems to argue that we should allow everyone to think what they want to think and not call them names. This sounds great and even-handed but the truth is that societies must have some shared values that the majority agree should be enforced. This argument is not about whether we should let everybody think what they want to think and act as they want to act but about the nature of the values we share.

Methods Of Abortion - Four Methods Of Abortion For You To Choose From

Varied methods are used by a doctor to terminate a pregnancy. Abortion is induced via a chemical or surgical procedure. The method of abortion chosen is directly related to the stage of pregnancy- early weeks, first trimester (term of 3 months), or second trimester - and the pregnant woman's preference.

(1) The chemical method simply means giving abortifacient (substance to bring about abortion) drugs to the patient concerned. This method of abortion is given preference over the surgical one by the mother-to-be. The drug administered is called the 'abortion pill'. Two oral drugs known as mifepristone and misoprostol are combined for the procedure. Also called RU-486, mifepristone puts a halt to the activity of the body's progesterone. As a result, the embryo separates from the uterus and bleeding takes place. Once this begins, misoprostol (one dose) is advised. The tablet induces uterine contractions, thus expelling the unborn fetus.

This method of abortion can be adopted only within the first 2 months of pregnancy in spite of being 95% effective and very safe in nature. In rare cases, the patient may need to end the treatment with a surgical procedure.

(2) Where surgical procedures are concerned, three methods of abortion are possible for terminating the pregnancy during the first three months of pregnancy. They are:

(a) After the cervix is dilated, the embryo is scraped off the walls of the uterus with the aid of a curette (sharp instrument). This is called Dilation and Curettage.

(b) Another method is MVA (Manual Vacuum Aspiration) where after dilating the cervix, the doctor removes the embryonic tissue via a syringe with the help of suction.

(c) Similar to the above is Electric Vacuum Aspiration. The syringe is replaced with an electric pump.

(3) There are three choices offered again where termination of pregnancy during the second trimester is concerned:

(a) The first method of abortion is D&E or Dilation and Evacuation. After dilating the cervix, the uterine walls are scraped with instruments. Finally, the embryonic tissue is removed with the help of suction.

(b) Another method is Hysterotomy or surgical incision of the uterus (similar to cesarean section), where the aborted fetus is removed.

(c) Intact Dilation and Extraction or Partial Birth Abortion is still under some controversy. The cervix is dilated. A forceps is used to reverse the fetus into a breech position. A suction device is inserted into the fetus' skull after a cut is made at its base. The device evacuates the brain tissue present inside.

(4) Though there is another method of abortion, which was very popular till the time anesthetics and surgery were invented, that is, the 19th century, it is neither advocated nor approved by the medical fraternity. This is the herbal method of abortion and is generally considered unsafe. So maybe it would be wiser to stay away from it altogether.

Abortion in Mexico

Abortion, always a controversial issue under any circumstances. Perhaps in Latin America is a debate more difficult to resolve.

In Mexico, abortion has been dealt with very superficially, the Mexicans have a deep-rooted philanthropy, this prevents them from having an open and unbiased opinion on such issues. The authorities fear the political costs of supporting laws legalizing this practice and have chosen to ignore the issues related to abortion. Accordingly place Mexico as a country with a large backlog in health safety on abortion.

Is sufficient to observe situations that are truly sad, as one recently in the state of Baja California, where a woman is sentenced to 23 years in prison for miscarriage. According to the woman, her abortion was not intentional, but even so the authorities showing his misogyny, have condemned her and other women under similar circumstances.

In Mexico, abortion is only legal under 7 conditions:

1) In case of rape.

2) When abortion is caused accidentally.

3) When the pregnancy threatens the woman's life and believes that the baby has no or little chance of living.

4) When it detects that the fetus has genetic defects.

5) When continuing the pregnancy would cause serious harm to the health of the woman, who has other children.

6) If the pregnancy is the result of artificial insemination unwanted and forced.

7) When the economy does not allow women to keep the baby, already mother of at least three children.

In these circumstances only the violation is accepted throughout the country, while the accidental abortion is accepted only in 29 of the 32 states. Only one of all states is abortion legal where justified by economic reasons. Only in the capital of the country is permitted abortion in case of women's own decision.

Of the 32 entities that make the Mexican Republic, only one fully decriminalized abortion. In Mexico City, abortion is legal only when performed before 12 weeks gestation.

In a highly religious country with a largely Catholic population, it is no surprise that abortion under any terms is neglected. There are even groups who disapprove of abortion in cases of rape.

The issue of abortion in Mexico, but a legal issue, is affected by the idiosyncrasies of this country. While it is legal in the country's capital, many women practice abortion as strictly confidential for fear of rejection that society might have.

People care more for the sin of abortion than for medical or legal terms. The church has consistently obstructed the authorities on legal matters. Many associations advocate abortion, not as a legal matter and make it a moral issue.

Abortion is an issue that divides opinions. In Mexico puts face to face: the laws against beliefs. The abortion appears to be the most controversial issue in Mexico and more difficult to treat.

Abortion Pros and Cons

Abortion pros and cons

When the topic of abortion comes up there is almost always a heated argument between both sides. There are pros and cons to abortion s some see it. In general, here are the pros and cons most often mentioned day those on both sides of the fence.

Abortion Pros

It is a woman's right to choose to do what she wants to with her own body. Those who hold to this argument say no one should be able to make a decision on what a woman can do with her own body. Those on the abortion pro side look at it as an inalienable human right. Of course, those on the abortion con side would retort, "The life of the baby is an inalienable human right that cannot be discarded."

Those on the abortion con side might also argue that abortion takes care of the problem. Many on the abortion pro camp have been quoted as saying, "Once it is done it is done." Again, on the other side of the argument, they would say that nothing can be further from the truth. Research does in fact bear out what has even been formally diagnosed as Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS). It is hard to deny that a woman is bound to go through tremendous emotional and physical stress after having undergone an abortion.

Abortion Cons

Those that are in the abortion con camp would say first and foremost that this is human life and it begins at conception. It is not an organism or unfeeling "fetus," but a living, breathing life. If in fact this is the case then abortion is murdering a human being. That is the primary assertion for those in this camp. The abortion pros would argue that life begins at different generally accepted but arbitrary periods. In truth, this argument cannot hold up to real science.

Abortion cons would also say that organizations that perform abortions do so for the money and disguise this as a commitment to the welfare of the mother but a look behind the scenes does tell the real story. That is why pro life organizations encourage a woman to at least get an ultra sound before making the choice to have an abortion.

These are just a few of the many pros and cons of abortion. If you would like to learn more or may be considering having an abortion then you may want to check out the link below.

Abortion and How to Select a Proper Clinic

If you have finally decided to get an abortion done, finding a legally operating abortion hospital can be difficult, because of the people who are promoting their clinics as abortion centers are under the management of anti-abortion institutions. Whatever the manner in which you are searching, you will find health centers for women operating side-by-side abortion centers, the former ones sustaining women's reproductive options, making it difficult for you to decide which one to opt for. Let us be clear, that such centers will not help you because they are all working towards reversing your decision to get an abortion, and they will delay the procedure to such an extent that it will be too late and hence risky to terminate the pregnancy.

A good clinic will either be able to terminate your pregnancy at their centre, or will ask you to reach a particular abortionist. Such clinics will have stated in their websites or promos that they offer referrals for abortion, or they can terminate pregnancy in their centre.

It is also confusing to reach correct information online, about the procedures and ways to get the abortion done. When you search on internet seeking abortion, you will be flooded with results which will guide you to centers dispensing medical knowledge on the process, primarily created to frighten you to give up the idea.

While searching on the internet, the result may not lead you to services for abortion; instead they may try to change your mind by sending you to people who have that intention in mind. There are many organizations in the USA that are working towards anti-abortion, and pro-life, which is a great obstacle in getting legal abortions.

Many websites that you may visit during your search will only be promoting Pro-life thoughts, but you can easily read through their intentions. Once the website talks about the risks involved in terminating a pregnancy, and the regrets that woman will have to undergo later, you are sure it is an anti-abortion website. Sometimes visuals of abortion are displayed to frighten you, and even go to the extent of suggesting that an abortion may lead to other health complications like breast cancer. They will also blow up after-effects of abortion, like damages to your interior organs, scarring which is a rarity, since abortions are undertaken by professionals who are trained to handle such situations.

Only a few health centers offer you either a referral service or terminate the pregnancy in their facility. Some clinics are anti-abortion, and they will never refer you to a place where you can get the service. In fact many such centers are known to discourage abortion and encourage adoption.

Getting an abortion is indeed difficult, especially in the wake of the fact that in the USA over 85 counties don't have a legal abortion service. Though, it is a legal process in the USA for over 30 years, the laws vary from county to county, depending on your age. The laws proclaim that as an adult, (18+), the choice of reproduction is a right conferred on you. For a teenager, consent for your abortion from your parents may not be required in some states and it may be required in some others, depending on your correct age and where you are residing.

After having chosen the right place to get the services for termination of pregnancy, you should clearly distinguish between the medical procedure and surgical procedure of the abortion, and opt for the one which suits your condition.

Why I Believe Abortion Should Be Legal, Safe and Rare

I have always been a supporter of a woman's right to choose. It is not simply that I am a supporter of abortion. I have never had an abortion and don't think I could. However, I should have the right to make that decision myself -- not have it forced on me. My position on abortion is really very simple -- it should be legal, safe and rare.

The most important reason for my belief that abortion should be legal and safe is very closely tied to women's rights. A society that controls and shackles women's freedom cannot be wholly free. I do believe the issue is one of power and control -- of domination -- over women. If men could become pregnant abortion would not even be an issue. Pregnancy and child care have long been ways that men have controlled and dominated women as well as restricted their education and professional lives. When abortion is outlawed or restricted by laws then it becomes even more of an issue of control and discrimination -- aimed at the lower classes. We know that abortion will never disappear entirely, at least until universal fail-safe birth control exists, and that people of means will be able to obtain a safe abortion here or abroad. Outlawing abortion simply ensures that the poor and disadvantaged will have no safe alternative.

I have never understood why so many people put so much time, money and effort into outlawing abortion when spending that same time, money and effort on helping women without choices and helping the many abused and neglected children we already have would do far more to prevent abortions than any law ever could. Contrary to many abortion foes belief, I don't believe abortion is an easy choice for most women -- and for those it is an easy choice it is probably better they not be given responsibility for the health and welfare of a fetus or child. Many women who choose to have an abortion feel they have no alternative. Why not work to truly help those women so they do have choices and options? Until our society truly takes its responsibility to the children already born so we have no child suffering starvation, poverty, neglect, and abuse -- and all our children are given every opportunity for a quality education and future then I don't want to see time and resources devoted to the prevention of abortion. Think of helping these disadvantaged women and children as preventing the abortions of tomorrow. Simply outlawing abortion will not solve the root problem, instead it will drive those in need of an abortion into back alleys, but if you can solve the problems of abuse and poverty then there will be fewer unwanted pregnancies and fewer abortions.

Another important reason I believe the choice should be left up to the woman in question is that I believe the decision to reproduce has to be made willingly and only by the person involved. Pregnancy and child birth is a physical ordeal that can have a lifelong impact on a woman's mental and physical health and well being. In addition, the decision to raise a child has tremendous personal, professional, and financial repercussions. While it takes two to make a baby, all too often in the case of an unplanned pregnancy it is the woman who is left to cope alone. It is really quite simple. I believe that if I am going to undergo a process that effects my physical and mental well being as well as my financial and professional future then I should be able to make the decision myself. I am a mother and I love my child more than anything, but my pregnancy and child birth were difficult and life threatening. I am not sure if I could have survived either without the support of my husband, family, friends, and co-workers. I know this group has been even more important to me while raising my child. I am an educated professional with a good job and a good support system. I cannot imagine how people with fewer resources do it. We are failing as a society when we force so many to do so.

If we want a society that is truly free and truly responsible for all its members then abortion must be legal and safe. If abortion foes truly want to stop abortions then they should work on addressing the root causes of abortion -- poverty, abuse, and lack of opportunity. The more we do to give women freedom of choice and control over their lives then the rarer abortion will be. Then everyone wins.

History of Abortion

Abortion has been around for a long time, and it has impacted women and men in a variety of ways, in different times and places. Christian influence in Western civilizations has caused widespread disapproval of this practice. Many nations passed laws by the 19th century that banned abortion. It was not until the latter half of the 20th century that some nations began to legalize it. Up to this time, debates about the moral issues of abortion continue to rage on. At times, these arguments become very heated and lead to violence.

Early Accounts of Abortions

There is anthropological evidence and written historical documentation that refer to abortion practices before the middle ages. During these times, women would induce abortion by using sharp sticks, poisonous herbs, abdominal pressure, special exercises and other crude techniques. Even late-term abortion was tolerated by some civilizations during this time.

The main opposition to abortion, as with today?s time, came from the Christian community. They used the Bible to justify their disapproval of this practice. But the debate on the moral issues of abortion has extended to even within the Christian community. Prominent Christians such as Saint Augustine refers to writings in the book of Exodus that say that abortion is not murder and is thus moral.

Abortion Debate

The controversy surrounding the practice of abortion has been around throughout its entire history. Without any factual breakthrough, the debates look to continue well into the future. One of the biggest things being weighed today is the right of a woman to choose against the morality of the practice.

The types of abortion are also a subject of debate today. The practice of partial-birth abortion and late-term abortion is a very touchy issue. Nowadays, most citizens are more moderate in their views of abortion than the politicians who create these abortion laws.

For And Against Abortion

Abortion

Introduction

It goes without saying that abortion is one of the controversial issues in the American society. The word "abortion" refers to any deliberate or accidental miscarriage. There have been a lot of debates about whether the concept of having an abortion is morally and legally right or not.

Abortion debates, all concerning abortion laws, are often used by two interest groups: pro-life and pro-choice. The first supporting the right of the unborn child and the second supporting the right of the pregnant mother. Pro-life arguments are mainly based upon this question: "Is the fetus a human being with a fundamental right to life?", while pro-choice is mainly focusing on: "Does a woman have the right to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy?"

Pro-life

Anti-choice, also known as pro-life, not only disagrees with the idea of having abortions but also is opposed to euthanasia, human cloning, research involving human embryonic stem cells and death penalty. They support for fetal rights. The contemporary pro-life movement is rooted in Christian beliefs.

South Dakota is one of the most politically pro-life states in U.S. In 2004, a law to completely ban abortion failed to pass. The state's Legislature passed five laws to restrict abortion in 2005. In March 2006, the state passed a ban on all abortions, except on the case that the pregnant woman's health is in danger, sending the measure to the voters. However, in the 2006 midterm elections, the ban was defeated through a popular referendum vote.

The U.S. Republican Party supports a pro-life position, though some Republicans are not pro-life. A Republican group named, The Wish List, supports pro-choice Republican women, like EMILY's List which supports pro-choice Democratic women. The Democrats for life of America are a group of pro-life Democrats on the political left who support a pro-life policy in the Democratic Party's and for pro-life Democratic candidates. Robert Casey, a former two term governor of Pennsylvania, is among the most well-known pro-life Democrats. There are also Republicans who have taken positions in favor of allowing abortion, such as Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, current Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City and the late former President Gerald Ford.

Pro-choice

Pro-choice describes the view that a woman should have complete control over her fertility and pregnancy. This includes the guarantee of reproductive rights, which includes consists of sexual education; access to safe and legal abortion, contraception, and fertility treatments; and legal protection from forced abortion.

People who are pro-choice believe that women should have access to safe and legal abortion and, at the same time, that women should be protected from forced abortions. Some talk about a number of situations where they feel abortion is a necessary option. Among these situations are those where the woman was raped, her health or life (or that of the fetus) is at risk, contraception was used but failed, or she feels that she is unable to raise a child.

Before 1973, abortion was simply a matter for the individual states. The first legal restrictions happened in the 1820s, forbidding abortion after the fourth month of pregnancy. By 1900, legislators had passed anti-abortion laws in most U.S. states. 1973 was the year in which Roe vs. Wade happened: During the second half of the 19th century American physicians began adopting severely restrictive laws about abortion, allowing the procedure only in cases of medical danger to the mother. With the arrival of 20th-century feminism and other reform movements, demand grew for the relaxation of abortion laws. In 1970 an unmarried woman in Dallas, Texas, wanted an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy. Having been refused under a state law that prohibited abortion unless the mother's health was at risk, Jane Roe (her pseudonym) claimed that the state denied her right to privacy which was guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. Although the Supreme Court knocked down state laws against abortion in Roe v. Wade in 1973, the debate did not end with its decision. Now after Roe vs. Wade, The US Supreme Court reached two important conclusions.

1. That abortion law was a federal constitutional law issue, not a state one, and was therefore to do the Constitution of the United States and federal law.

2. That the affording of an abortion was a constitutional right during the first and second trimesters (a period of three months) of a pregnancy based on the constitutional right to privacy, but that the state's interest in protecting "potential life" continued in the third trimester unless the mother's health was in danger. In subsequent verdicts, the Court rejected the trimester framework altogether in favor of a date at the point of fetal viability.

The major pro-choice advocacy and lobbying groups in the United States are Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Organization of Women, and the American Civil Liberties Union. Most of the leading feminist organizations also support pro-choice positions, although there are also pro-life feminist organizations, such as Feminists for Life.

In the United States, the Democratic Party supports the pro-choice position, stating that abortion should be "safe, legal, and rare". Not all Democrats agree with this position, however, and there is a small pro-life section within the party, expressed in such groups as Democrats for Life of America. Although the 2004 Republican position is pro-life, advocating a Human Life Amendment to the constitution banning abortion, there are several nationally prominent Republicans who classify themselves as pro-choice, including former New York Governor George Pataki and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Two polls were carried out in May 2007 asking Americans "With respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life?" A CNN poll result was that 45% said pro-choice and 50% said pro-life. Within the next week, a Gallup poll declared that 49% were pro-choice and 45% were pro-life.

Advocacy Groups in Between

After more than forty years of debate, the abortion issue still remains one of the most controversial issues in American society. A broad range of positions exists on this issue: On one hand there are those who advocate abortion-on-demand (100% pro-choice), to those who oppose every form of abortion on the other hand (100% pro-life). Between these two there is a significant range of positions. Some disagree with abortion, but are willing to work at reducing the number of abortions through prevention of unwanted pregnancies, a task they pursue through targeted sex education and/or increased availability of contraception. Current legislation in United States Congress, the Pregnant Women Support Act, is after reducing the abortion rate in the U.S. without making any procedure illegal and with paying attention to Roe v. Wade. There are also some who support legal abortion within the first two trimesters but do not agree with late-term abortions. Some oppose most abortions but make exception for cases where the mother's life is in great danger. In this category, some also make an exception for severe deformities of the unborn child. Others make exceptions when the pregnancy was not caused by consent of the mother on sexual activity or may violate social taboos, as in cases of rape and incest. Some allow for all these exceptions, but do not agree with abortion-on-demand.

Conclusion

Pro-life supports are those who are in favor of traditional and family values such as monogamy, marriage and motherhood while pro-choicers regard these traditional values with suspicion and instead promote promiscuity, polygamy and homosexuality. Pro-choicers believe that the traditional values are designed in a way to oppress women and their individuality and freedom.

Therefore part of the conflict between these two extreme ideas is not about abortion at all, it is about ideology. The role of abortion here is that of a battlefield; a battlefield on which a "civil war" is fought between left and right or better to say between conservatives and liberals. The war is about what kind of America people want to live in and what kind of country America should be. So, again and again, abortion is only one of the battlefields.

Abortion: Diagnosis And Treatment

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of an abortion is obvious in a pregnant woman who presents with vaginal bleeding or expulsion of POC. However it become difficult when there is scant bleeding or no bleeding which can happen in incomplete abortion. Hence it is the author's view that any bleeding more than just slight spotting be considered as abortion or threatened abortion and investigated appropriately.

A thorough history must be elicited from the lady, enquiring in detail about the quantity of bleeding, any associated pain and other symptoms. This should be followed by a general physical examination with emphasis on looking for pallor, tachycardia (Increased Heart rate), and BP.

Thereafter a visual inspection of the genital areas is done to estimate the actual bleeding. A PV examination is contraindicated and should not be done under any circumstance. A gentle palpation of the uterus through the abdomen may be done but is unlikely to reveal any abnormalities.

An USG is the gold standard diagnostic test for abortion. A ultrasound is mandatory in cases of suspected or confirmed cases of abortion. A USG will not only confirm the diagnosis, it will also point out any complications like retained products, infection, etc.

Apart from these routine lab investigations like complete blood count, urine analysis, and HCG levels are also done.

Treatment

Threatened Abortion is typically treated conservatively. Strict bed rest is usually advised for three to five days. Thereafter women are encouraged to move gradually. Any associated conditions like high BP should be corrected. Laxatives and fluids are usually prescribed to prevent straining in the toilet.

Many gynecologists prefer to prescribe progesterone to women with threatened abortion. However the author is of this view that this really does not help the pregnancy. Although there are certain anecdotal evidence that progesterone may prolong pregnancy, there is no clear evidence to this effect.

A complete abortion will usually require no treatment other than just ensuring that all products of conception have been expelled.

An incomplete and missed abortion will both require medical intervention to expel the retained products of conception. This is conveniently done by surgical procedures like D&C or may be done by using drugs used in medical abortion like misoprostol.

Pregnancy After Abortion

An abortion will usually have no deleterious effects on further fertility. After abortion, normal periods should return by about 4-6 weeks time. In the meantime women may notice recurrent spotting or other bleeding intermittently, which is quite normal and will not require any specific management.

Medical Abortion or Abortion using pills has been a boon to many women. It provides privacy and control which no abortion clinic can provide. It is safe, effective and cheaper than the regular surgical options. Hence world wide there is an increasing trend towards use of abortion pills. Meet the Abortion Providers

When Brenda Pratt Shafer, RN, walked into Dr. Martin Haskel's abortion clinic, she had no idea her life was about to change forever. A strong pro-choice advocate all her life, she had no qualms about taking a nursing assignment at an abortion clinic. After all, it couldn't be that bad. It was legal, wasn't it?

In that abortion clinic she saw Dr. Haskel do first trimester D&C and second trimester D&E abortions. Then on the third day she witnessed his specialty, his invention, the third trimester partial birth abortion. After expericening this horror, Brenda left, never to return.

Abortion in Hollywood

Abortion is a controversial subject, and it is interesting to look at how it is, or is not, portrayed in cinema.

There is a distinct difference between Hollywood films and European films when it comes to how abortion is covered. It is usually avoided altogether in Hollywood movies, with European films much more wiling to cover this difficult subject. This is no surprise when you look at the number of films with happy endings in Hollywood. The vast majority end happily whereas in French cinema, for example, more films end with unhappy endings than happy ones.

This brings up the question of why people watch films. Do they watch as a form of escapism or do they want to be shown a realistic portrayal of the subject the film is visiting. Hollywood films are generally produced as a form of escapism for their audience and to entertain people. They therefore tend to avoid controversy and unhappy endings; the audience expects to be made to feel happy about the story finished. European film focus more on realism and doesn't mind touching on difficult subjects.

There are rarely mentions of abortion in Hollywood movies. Whatever filmmakers' personal opinions are on the subject they won't portray this for fear of upsetting one side of the argument or the other. When unplanned pregnancies occur abortion is hardly ever considered as an option by the characters, although many in this situation in real life would consider it.

There are of course exception to this rule. Amongst these are Dirty Dancing, High Fidelity, If These Walls Could Talk and I Had An Abortion.

In Dirty Dancing the character of Penny decides to have an abortion because the Father will not admit that he is responsible. Many in this situation make a similar choice, as they do not want to bring up a child on their own. She has an illegal abortion that is botched. This portrays abortion as being dangerous to pregnant women, whereas in reality this is inaccurate. In reality it would be unlikely that she would choose an illegal abortion over a legal one. This therefore shows abortion in a more negative light (from the pregnant woman's point of view) than is realistic.

In High Fidelity Laura had an abortion without consulting her boyfriend because he has cheated on her. When he finds out he is angry for not being consulted. This is a natural reaction for men in this situation, and shows a more realistic portrayal of the subject.

Three women who have unplanned pregnancies are shown in If These Walls Could Talk. They are based at different times over the last sixty years - 1952, 1974 and 1996. The first of these women becomes pregnant by her brother-in-law and decides to have an abortion. At the time it was illegal so it is performed on her kitchen table, and she dies as a result of this. In the second case a woman considers aborting her fifth pregnancy (having given birth on the four previous occasions) but decides against it. In the 1996 storyline, the pregnant woman plans an abortion, but it takes place during an abortion protest. A protester shoots her doctor.

I Had An Abortion is a documentary film where ten women who have had an abortion are interviewed. These women had their abortion from the 1930's to the time the film was made (2005). It looks at the attitudes at the time and is almost a history of the changing attitudes. It shows a human aspect that is rare in film when it comes to this particular subject.

Abortion is legal in the US and polls show that over 80% believe that it should be. However it is still largely untouched by Hollywood. Does this mean filmmakers are afraid of touching the subject in case the audience reacts negatively? Or it could be the way of Hollywood; that abortion is not considered a happy ending, and pregnancy should be shown as being a joyful blessing no matter what the circumstances. Europe seems less afraid to offend, but then this may again be because of the style of films they tend to make. It is possible people have pre-conception of Hollywood and European cinema that dictate the rules as to how films, if they want to be successful, should be made. In Hollywood it may well be safer to ignore the subject.

What Happens at an Abortion Clinic?

For some women, having a child is just not a good idea for them. There are certain circumstances that will leave them no other choice but to have an abortion to terminate the pregnancy. When this is the case, they need to go somewhere that they can feel safe and secure to have this procedure performed. That is why there are abortion clinics available to help these scared women get the help that they need.

An abortion is the term used by the medical terminology to describe an early ending to a pregnancy. Most people will refer to an abortion as a method that a women uses to end a pregnancy. This is called termination under the law and it is legal up to the twenty-fourth week of the pregnancy. An abortion clinic is places that will help women safely end her pregnancy.

The abortion clinic will usually have certified doctors on hand to do the procedures. They will make sure that they perform the abortion correctly so that there are no lifetime effects on the woman. If an abortion is done incorrectly, it may limit the women to having any further pregnancies in the future. This may end her chances of ever having children if there are complications to the surgery.

Anyone can come to the abortion clinic and get the help that they need. Sometimes young girls will find themselves pregnant and they do not want their parents to know. For some of these cases, the abortion clinic can keep the procedure in their confidence and their parents will not have to be called in.

Most of the time the abortions that are done in the clinic are successful. They are done with no complications and the women are free to have children later in life when they are ready. There are counselors that are available to help the women work through their problems mentally and physically as well. It is important for women to know that they are not going to be punished for their choice. It is there choice and one that should not control their entire life. They need to learn to forgive themselves and take control of their life from that point on.

Abortion clinics do not say that an abortion is a way of birth control. It is not recommended that they have an abortion every time they do not want to have a baby. There needs to be the proper counseling so that they can use the proper method of birth control in the future. This is something that women can get help with when they visit the clinic.

There are certain people that protest the clinics because of their religious beliefs. This is a personal choice and one that should not affect a woman that is considering an abortion at an abortion clinic.

Locating Abortion Information

Getting quality abortion information can be a rather difficult endeavor. Especially with a poor and underserved communities and for teenagers that may fear seeking it out. Much of the information about abortion that is routinely handed out is actually being disseminated by so-called "pro-life" groups masquerading as organizations trying to help young women make the "right choice". They have become proficient in using scare tactics and trickery. One such example of their deception is describing their pro-life believes in what looks like informational literature. Whether they care about you or your baby is really suspect. At times it would appear as if they only care about promoting their own agenda.

To get quality abortion information to a group by the name of Planned Parenthood is an excellent place to start. Their sole function is to assist women in making their own intelligent choices, taking advantage of the freedom over their own bodies that the Supreme Court has declared it is their right. While these anti-abortion groups terrorize women and the doctors that assist them, organizations like Planned Parenthood help out women by giving them good abortion information, as well as information about birth control, and other types of sexual information and they would like to learn more. There is no point subjecting yourself to right wing propaganda, go for reliable, quality information.

I recall having a cousin who at the age of 17 became pregnant unintentionally. The town that she lived in was rather uptight, and didn't have any abortion information that could be of assistance to her. She finally located what was termed as an "abortion counseling" clinic and went there to get abortion information.

What she learned there turned out to really frighten her. They told her that if she were to get an abortion it was likely that she could suffer from complications and maybe even die, that she would regret the decision for the rest of her days, and that her friends and family would find out all about her abortion and disown her out of shame.

Well, as you can imagine this organization had an agenda and it was not about to disseminate abortion information to anyone. Fortunately, because she's a bright girl, she was able to see through their ruse. She and the getting an abortion and as far as I understand does not regret her decision. Her parents never found out about it and it was because of her bully that they would disowned her that she never went to them for help in obtaining abortion information to begin with.

Desire For a Replacement Child After Abortion and Possible Aftereffects

Number of women after having terminated pregnancy through abortion may become overwhelmed with guilt and may become pregnant again desiring to replace the child lost. While some of the women carry the second baby to terms, studies have shown that most of the second abortions take place within a year of the first one. If the pregnancy does take place as a result of desire to replace a child it definitely should be treated as a "crisis" pregnancy, with much needed support and tender loving care, otherwise repeated abortion may take place.

In spite of what is being told about abortion, its aftereffects are profound and our society has not began yet to fully realize the extent of damage abortion can cause.

If an abortion has taken place in a marriage it is very likely to disrupt the dynamics of a healthy and happy family. It is particularly true if subsequent children were born out of desire to replace what was lost to the abortion. But it does not affect only children that are born after an abortion, it affects children that were born before as well. Some children may develop a "survival syndrome", while not being a medical or psychological term, it definitely exists in many children that were affected by abortion. These children will do just anything they can in order to please their parents and people around them. They often may feel that they can not do enough to earn respect and love. But on the other hand if a child is misbehaving and call for some discipline and reprimand, parents may be so overwhelmed with guilt over past abortion that hesitate to reprimand the child when they called to so. This inability to discipline and reprimand the child can be present in parent-child relationship in both with children that were born before abortion as well as with children that were born after.

Children that are born after abortion, and in particular children that were born out of desire to replace a child lost, may go through some very difficult times in their relationships with their parents. One of the most difficult parts that parents need to learn that nothing will ever replace what was lost. This can be done by acknowledging that what was lost was very precious, unique and irreplaceable, and help bring a closure.

Many teenagers have asked "Why don't you accept me for who I am?!" While this kind of question can be result of a rebellion stage of their lives, one can not help but wonder whether the parents see in this child some one else? Not only did they see some one else, but it is very possible they wanted to be that child some one else. In the mind of parents the child, that would have been born if abortion did not take place, is better and the child that they have never meets their expectations.

To brake through this kind of vicious cycle, the couple who may have had an abortion would need some deep soul searching and maybe some professional help as well. The good news that there are many people today who come forth and talk about their personal experience of abortion and its aftereffects on their lives. The support groups are being formed around the world where people help each other on the path of healing after abortion.

Ben Folds Live

Ben Folds LiveBen Folds Live is a stellar exception to the rule that live albums are contractually obliged stocking fillers. Folds is at his best on stage with only a grand piano for company. He is a compelling showman who's blessed with an unforced charm that complements the anger and melancholy that informs most of his songs: the self-lacerating "Army" loses nothing by having a hall of people bellowing the saxophone and trumpet parts as Folds conducts them. The material here spans Folds' work with the three-piece Ben Folds Five as well as 2001's excellent solo debut. The readings of "Fred Jones," "The Luckiest," and "Brick" display an immediacy and intimacy that transcend the recorded versions. A couple of worthwhile curiosities--a minor chord rearrangement of "Song for the Dumped" and a faithful, affecting version of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" round out the offerings. This is an impeccable document of a superior performer at work. --Andrew Mueller

Abortion: "Event" or "Nonevent"?

There is no other topic that brings so much weight and even makes people uncomfortable as topic of abortion. No matter on what side of the issue you personally are, some one who promotes abortion or some one who opposes it fiercely, abortion in no way can be qualified as nonevent.

Cutting your finger while chopping greens as you cook can be qualified as a "nonevent". After your finger is healed, which if you are a healthy individual should not take more that just few days, you may find it even difficult to remember what finger was cut. Maybe just a scar may remind of the accident, and even then you may not be sure since you may have cut your fingers while chopping green countless times in the past. Most important, cutting your finger will rarely move you to become an advocate or an opponent of knife manufacturer.

It is never like that with abortion. Any one who had been affected by, or participated in abortion become deeply affected by the event. They either become advocates of abortion, opponents of it, or sometimes quiet sufferers, and the number of people that had not been affected is marginal.

One thing is particularly clear, no matter how you have been affected by abortion, its aftermath can last for years and it takes much courage if you choose the path of healing. This path will take you on an incredible journey of rediscovering God and his love for you all over again.

One of the most common feeling that women feel in the abortion aftermath is being along and abandoned. The truth is that you are not along, God is with you. There are also many man and women who have walked your path and are willing to share with you and be your companion on the path of healing.

Abortion - The Real Issue

One of the hottest topics for the last 35+ years has been the abortion issue. It is always characterized as a complex issue. It is only complex if one fails to address the real issue.

What is the real issue? Quite simply that abortion is the termination of a human life and as such is no different than any other form of murder. I realize that sounds harsh. Proponents of pro-choice would say that there are so many other issues at work here. I agree. But they are side issues to what the main issue is. The following is an argument against abortion from a logical standpoint and not from a religious standpoint.

It comes down to life. Do you advocate life or not? There are those that would argue this point, obviously, and claim it is a woman's right to do with her body as she chooses. I would argue there is a bigger issue that they don't want to face which allows them to make the arguments that they do.

Here is what we know: 1) women bear the children in the human species. That's just the way it is. It doesn't matter if you don't like it, it just is. 2) when a child is conceived a human being is created and advances through the many stages of growth rapidly. By four weeks the heart is beating and the brain and central nervous system have formed. For all intents and purposes this is a human being. By twenty weeks, through the miracle of modern medicine, this person can live outside of the womb if needed.

Now, our society professes to value life. You can't take someone's life without consequences unless it is through self-defense. Doctors take an oath to above all do no harm. The Constitution provides for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The real issue in the abortion debate is the unborn child. This child doesn't appear to have any rights in our society. It is the main victim that pays the ultimate price, with no say in the matter. It is the main victim who has no fault in the matter. It did not choose to be conceived, yet it happened. How is it legal to terminate it's life? This is not a judgement on those that have chosen abortion, but a legitimate question.

How is it legal to terminate an unborn child at any point in the pregnancy, but if a pregnant woman is injured in a car accident and her unborn child is killed, in some states manslaughter or vehicular homicide charges can be brought against the driver of the other car? Is this logical? There really are only victims in the abortion issue. The unborn child is a victim. The mother is a victim. Women who have abortions often suffer psychological issues of guilt for the rest of their lives. How many women do you know who proudly state that they have had an abortion? The father of the child is a victim. He has no rights in this issue, much like the unborn child. It doesn't matter if he does not want the mother to get the abortion. Under the law, it's not his call.

All of the focus in the abortion debate has been with the rights of the woman who is pregnant. None of the other parties involved have any rights. How is that fair? There are alternatives to abortion of course, having the child and keeping it or putting it up for adoption. Those alternatives at least give rights to the other parties involved. The child, it gets to live, the mother, may have a change of heart after seeing her child, and the father who, if the mother doesn't want the child, can choose to keep it.

I am not diminishing the rights of the mother in this argument, but as stated earlier, women are the ones who bear the children, like it or not. If she becomes pregnant she is carrying another human being and her body becomes not entirely her own for that period of time. Whether the reason for the abortion is inconvenience, possible birth defects or whatever the reason, that reason is not more important than the real issue, the life of the unborn child. Two wrongs don't make a right. What seems like a solution to a 'problem' only ends up creating more pain and heartache for those involved. If we value life as a society, then having abortion on demand is illogical.

If you are considering abortion, please take into account all of the factors that will be a result of a decision that cannot be reversed. A decision that may haunt you for the rest of your life.

Chemical Or Surgical Abortion - How Do Women Decide?

Women who are concerned about whether to get a chemical or surgical abortion should first find out the facts, say experts.

Since 1973, when abortion was first legalized in the United States, women have resorted to surgical abortions, which are often uncomfortable and risky. In more recent years, they have been able to choose a chemical abortion, RU-486, thus avoiding surgery. But the safety of chemical abortion has come into question since the deaths of at least seven women in 2006.

(RU-486 is not the same as Plan B, also called the morning after pill. Plan B must be taken within three days of conception. RU-486, sometimes called Mifepristone, can be taken within 49 days of conception.)

RU-486 has come under public scrutiny in the last several years because of questions regarding its safety. A 2008 study conducted at the University of Michigan and published in The Journal of Immunology has indicated that "off-label use" of the controversial abortion drugs mifepristone (Mifeprex) and misoprostol (Cytotec), collectively used in the chemical abortion procedure, may be linked to the death of at least eight women.

RU-486, or Mifepristone, is given initially, and then Misoprostol is given two days later. It is recommended that both drugs be taken in the doctor's office. However, Planned Parenthood's recommendation, until 2006, to use the abortion-causing drug Misoprostol vaginally rather than orally, contrary to FDA recommendations, has led to the taking of the second drug at home, thus leading to various complications, sometimes including death.

The surgical means of pregnancy termination, however, is associated with many problems. The Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, states that, "Worldwide, an estimated five million women are hospitalized each year for treatment of abortion-related complications, such as hemorrhage and sepsis."

Immediate complications, according to experts, include infection, excessive bleeding, embolism, ripping or perforation of the uterus, anesthesia complications, convulsions, hemorrhage, cervical injury, and endotoxic shock. The most common long-term complications include fever, chronic abdominal pain, vomiting, gastro-intestinal disturbances, Rh sensitization, cancer of the breast, cervix, ectopic pregnancies, subsequent miscarriatge and premature birth, and low birthweight babies, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, a lowering in general health, and occasionally even death.

Making an informed decision about abortion is critical. About 180 women in the western Chicago suburb of Berwyn, IL had abortions in 2005, and about 325 had the procedure in nearby Cicero in the same year.

Women in Berwyn and Cicero, as well as Oak Park, Stickney, Westchester, and other nearby Illinois cities who are considering whether to get a chemical or surgical abortion should get the facts and call WomanCare Services in Berwyn, at 708-795-6000 for a free pregnancy test, or arrange for a free ultrasound.

Plan B One Step Emergency Contraceptive Must be 17 or over to purchase without a prescription 1 ea

Plan B One Step Emergency Contraceptive Must be 17 or over to purchase without a prescription 1 eaMust be 17 years or older to purchase without a prescription
What Plan BR One-Step is:
Plan BR One-Step is an emergency contraceptive, now available in just one pill. It can help prevent a pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. When taken as directed - within 72 hours (3 days) after contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse - approximately seven out of eight women who would have gotten pregnant will not become pregnant after taking Plan BR One-Step. But the sooner you take it, the more effective it will be.
Plan BR One-Step is safe and effective. Plan BR One-Step is FDA-approved and contains levonorgestrel, the same ingredient found in many birth control pills. The difference is that Plan BR One-Step requires just one pill which uses a larger dose of levonorgestrel than a single birth control pill. And, unlike many birth control pills, Plan BR One-Step doesn't contain any estrogen, only progestin.
What Plan BR isn't:
Plan BR One-Step isn't RU-486 (the abortion pill); it won't work if you're already pregnant, and it won't affect an existing pregnancy.
Plan BR One-Step isn't regular birth control and should not be used that way. Plan BR One-Step is not as effective as other methods of birth control used consistently and correctly. It's important to have another reliable source of birth control that's right for you. Plan BR One-Step won't protect you from HIV infection (the virus that causes AIDS) or any other sexually transmitted disease (STD).
The sooner you take Plan BR One-Step, the more effective it is.
You only have a few days to prevent a pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (the condom slipped, or you missed your pill).
Every hour counts. When taken as directed - within 72 hours (3 days) after contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse - approximately seven out of eight women who would have gotten pregnant will not b

The Moon & Antarctica

The Moon & AntarcticaWith their interstellar (really!) lyrics and angular song structures, Modest Mouse tend to defy their self-deprecating band name. In truth, the trio's got some lofty ambitions, and The Moon and Antarctica indulges their grand dreams with pristine production and a vivid sonic backdrop. It also dives deeply into their geographical obsessions--always with the same subjective twists that made The Lonesome Crowded West and This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About such inspired wonders. Isaac Brock opens Moon with meditations on the universe's shape--all twisted into such a solipsistic tangle that they illuminate immediately how much these songs are about the mind as about the world. Rarely giving off the cage-jarring thickness of guitar rock, Moon's 15 tunes are shaped around vignettes of a disheveled head figuring out the rambling disconnections of postmodern society. Guitars wobble, Brock wails on vocals, and his band mates--Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green--help take each song away from any predictable formula and toward wherever they seem to want to go. This is a band as profoundly touched by suburbia as was writer Harold Brodkey. You can imagine Brock, Green, and Judy lying on wide-open lawns, philosophizing about the shape of the universe and coming up with lyric moments like this (sung to folky, spare acoustic guitar): "A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard and as my own dog ran away I didn't say much of anything at all / A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard as my little sister played; the dogs took her away, and I guess she was eaten up, okay." Think Before You Abort - All About the Trauma of Post Abortion Syndrome

Chronic suffering and symptoms that lead to Post Abortion Syndrome, a form of Prolonged Adaptation Stress Disorder (PASS), are commonly seen in women who abort their child, be it voluntarily, forcibly, or due to unavoidable medical complications. The trauma of the syndrome is equally experienced by all of them irrespective of the reason. Unfortunately, most of us fail to attend to a woman's emotional well-being after the child is aborted, thereby making it all the more difficult to deal with post-abortion stress.

In medical terminology, Post-Abortion Syndrome is defined as "a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced by women after a pregnancy termination". The feelings of guilt, pain and loss that are naturally felt by a woman after the procedure are nothing but early signs of distress. If these feelings do not heal or their own, they lead to long-term psychological effects resulting in a group of symptoms that together constitute the syndrome.

The probability of occurrence of this syndrome is usually high in women who were unsure about their decision or had an unstable mindset during the process pregnancy termination. Another risk factor that contributes to the occurrence of this post-traumatic stress disorder is lack of adequate counseling before undergoing the procedure.

Major Symptoms

Prolonged Adaptation Stress Disorder (PASS) faced by women post-abortion is usually characterized by the following symptoms:

1) Prolonged feeling of guilt

2) Tendency of the patient to associate the bad events in life to their act of pregnancy termination.

3) Tendency of religious women to think of the act as a sin and associate the setbacks in life as a punishment from God.

4) Irritability and hyper-anxiety

5) Insomnia and other sleep disorders

6) Eating disorders, headaches, and increased heart rate

7) Hatred for those who influenced her decision to abort

8) Over-protective or over-abusive for her future children

9) Psychological detachment and tendency to refrain from thoughts, places, and activities associated with abortion.

10) Drugs and alcohol addiction, as well as self-harming behaviors

11) Tendency to fantasize the age of the unborn baby every year on the date corresponding to date of abortion. This is commonly called the 'Anniversary Syndrome".

The best way to deal with this syndrome is to seek medical care as soon as possible without letting the woman subjugate her depressive emotions, expecting them to heal on their own.
